Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much liability coverage do I actually need?
State minimums keep you legal, but they're often far too low to protect you in a serious accident — one ER visit can blow past a $25,000 limit. We typically recommend limits high enough to cover your assets and future income, because anything the policy doesn't pay can come out of your pocket. We'll model a few limit options against your situation so you're choosing protection, not just compliance.
What does liability insurance pay for — and what doesn't it cover?
Liability pays for the other party's injuries and property damage when you're at fault, plus your legal defense if you're sued. It does not pay for your own car, your own injuries, or theft and weather damage — those need collision, comprehensive, and medical/PIP coverage. If protecting your own vehicle matters, you'll want to look at full coverage.
Is liability the same as full coverage?
No. Liability only covers what you do to others; full coverage adds collision and comprehensive to protect your own vehicle. Liability-only is common on older, paid-off cars where the vehicle isn't worth insuring, while full coverage is the norm for newer or financed cars.
Will my liability follow me when I rent or borrow a car?
In most cases your liability coverage extends to a rental or a borrowed vehicle, but the specifics depend on your policy and state. It generally won't cover damage to the rental itself — that's where a rental's own coverage or a credit-card benefit comes in. Tell us how often you rent and we'll make sure there are no surprises.
How do I keep liability-only insurance affordable?
Because liability is the leanest coverage, the main savings come from shopping carriers and stacking discounts — safe-driver, low-mileage, paid-in-full, and bundling with another policy. We compare trusted insurance companies so you're not overpaying a single company for the state minimum.
